Background I am Desmond Oghanihun Ugegeh, a passionate and multidisciplinary researcher, educator, and advocate for sustainable environmental practices, with a strong foundation in Zoology and Fisheries Biology. My journey began with a curiosity about the natural world, leading me to pursue a B.Sc. in Zoology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. I soon realized that the health of aquatic ecosystems, particularly fisheries, was critical to both the environment and local communities. This realization sparked my deep interest in the management and conservation of aquatic resources, eventually leading me to pursue a Master’s in Fisheries Biology and Management from the University of Lagos. Throughout my academic journey, I have always been fascinated by the intersection of technology and environmental conservation. As part of my ongoing Ph.D. research, I am applying advanced machine learning techniques to predict water pollution levels and develop strategies for the sustainable management of fisheries. This work reflects my commitment to integrating data science and machine learning with environmental conservation, leveraging tools such as Python, Power BI, SQL, and Tableau. My professional journey has also been enriched by my roles as an educator. As an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Delta, Agbor, I have designed and delivered courses that integrate data analysis and marine science. I also enjoy mentoring students on research projects, helping them to navigate statistical methods and spatial modeling techniques, which are vital for understanding complex environmental issues. My teaching experience has been diverse, spanning biology, data science, and marine science, and has allowed me to collaborate with professionals in multiple fields. Over the years, I have had the privilege of contributing to various research projects, including assessing the biology and heavy metal concentration in tiger shrimp in Lagos Lagoon. This work has been published in the West African Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, marking a significant milestone in my research career. Additionally, I have attended several seminars and training programs to expand my knowledge, such as the IOI Ocean Academy Course on Blue Economy and Sustainable Development, further enhancing my understanding of global sustainability challenges. I am a strong believer in the power of data to drive change, particularly in areas of environmental conservation. By combining my background in fisheries biology with data science, I am poised to make a meaningful impact in fisheries management, pollution control, and the preservation of aquatic biodiversity. My journey so far has been one of continuous learning and contribution, and I am excited to continue leveraging my skills to promote sustainability and ecological well-being.
